On 26 October 2013 Tauranga Regional Multicultural Council (TRMC) launched an exhibition titled Around the World in 80 Dishes.

It took visitors on a journey of discovery of cultures, art and traditions of 10 countries, among them Poland. Participating ethnic groups showcased everyday life in rooms of houses, displaying some of the items used in the kitchen or dining room, such as table cloths, dinner sets, pots, pans, cutlery and art as well as traditional costumes.

National dishes are part of a nation's identity and self-image. They also open doors and hearts - not only those of men, the way to whose hearts apparently leads through their stomachs if a proverb used in many languages is anything to go by. Food piques interest and curiosity. It is a talking point. It satisfies one of everybody’s basic needs. Its smells and visual appeal often entice people all over the world to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. And in so doing they make friends with people from a different culture they might otherwise not have met or opened up to.

TRMC took all those ingredients of national cuisines and cooked up an exhibition with the help of some of the region's ethnic groups.

Anybody for pierogi, bigos, barszczyk czerwony or just some simple nalesniki with a filling?
